Banana slugs are an important member of the coastal redwood community. They enjoy the cool dampness of the forest floor where they act as the clean up and recycle crew. The slugs can be as long as 9 inches. They secrete a slimy mucus that protects them from predators (it's yucky), prevents dehydration, and forms a slick friction-reducing path they use to slide over the forest floor.
